Hot Stone Massage is best for people who have muscle pain and tension or who simply want to relax. This type of therapeutic massage is similar to Swedish massage except that therapists use heated stones in lieu of or in addition to their hands. During Hot Stone Massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on different areas of the body. Therapists may hold a stone as they massage different parts of the body using Swedish Massage techniques with gentle pressure. Sometimes, cold stones are also used after hot stones to calm any engorged blood vessels and to soothe the skin.
The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. The stones are heated in a controlled manner to ensure they do not exceed the proper temperature. The temperature of the stones typically ranges between 43-55 degrees Celsius and is set to ensure the stones do their job without causing you harm. Nevertheless, every person has different pain tolerance. You are encouraged to notify the massage therapist immediately if you begin to feel any pain or discomfort.
Hot Stone helps ease muscle tension, improve blood flow, alleviate pain, promote relaxation, and relieve stress.
Make sure you are clean and free of fragranced personal care products before receiving Hot Stone Massage. You may undress to the level you are comfortable. Since you will be covered in a drape except for whichever body part the massage therapist is working on, underwear is optional. For a full body massage, most get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable with leaving your underwear on, that is fine. Our experienced therapists will give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table, and will work around the clothes you left on as best as they can.
When performed by a trained therapist, Hot Stone Massage is generally safe. A prenatal massage may help relieve stress and ease uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms. However, most massage therapists would not use Hot Stones on pregnant women. Pregnant clients are encouraged to obtain doctor’s approval before receiving Hot Stone Massage.
