FAQs About Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

The name Osteopathy derives from Ancient Greek ὀστέον (ostéon) meaning “bone”, and πάθος (páthos) meaning “pain, suffering”.  Traditional Osteopathy is a natural manual therapy which aims to restore function in the body by treating the causes of pain and imbalance.  The Osteopathic philosophy embraces the notion that the body is naturally capable of healing itself.  Osteopaths work with the body to enhance this natural ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

Is Osteopathy a legitimate health practice?

Yes.  In Canada, Osteopathic Manual Practitioners have to complete a diploma program and extensive training in manual osteopathic practice after obtaining another university level designation in the health field.  Osteopaths do not provide surgery or prescribe medication, but can assess and deliver the gentle hands-on techniques based on the original Osteopathic philosophies.  They rely on the quality and finesse of their palpation and work with the position, mobility, and quality of the tissues.

How is Osteopathy different from Chiropractic?
  • Chiropractors focus mainly on the spine, while Osteopaths take a more holistic approach and concentrate on the whole body.  Osteopaths treat a wider range of ailments including respiratory and digestive problems.
  • Osteopaths use a wider range of techniques, while Chiropractors routinely perform spinal adjustments and focus on joints.
  • Osteopaths use manual techniques such as palpation, while Chiropractors tend to rely more heavily on diagnostic equipment such as x-rays and MRI scans to assess patients.
What do I need to prepare for Osteopathy?

To have Osteopathy treatment, you will usually need to undress so that your Osteopath can see and manipulate your joints.  They will then use their hands to locate problem areas and treat them using massage or manual manipulation.

  • If you have pain in your back, you should be aware that your Osteopath will probably need you to take off your top.  If you are female, you may want to think about wearing a sports bra or a bra that you do not mind wearing in front of your Osteopath.
  • If you have pain in your upper leg/thigh region, you may want to consider wearing loose fitting shorts or underwear that you do not mind wearing in front of your Osteopath.

I am pregnant.  Is Osteopathy right for me?

During pregnancy, the body goes through a tremendous amount of changes (such as increase in weight, change in posture, hormonal effects of the softening of the ligaments, the position of the growing baby).  These physical changes can put additional pressure on your joints, and the muscles of your spine and pelvis.  Osteopathy during pregnancy helps assist the natural progress of pregnancy by helping the body adapt and align to the changes in the body as the pregnancy progresses.  These treatments are done using safe and efficient techniques, with the comfort of the mother being the top priority.

For more details, clients are encouraged to consult with us directly via telephone or email.

Is Osteopathy equivalent to medical treatment or medication?

Osteopathy focuses on facilitating the health of joints and muscles through non-invasive manual therapy, helping to strengthen the framework of the body, and acts as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatment and medication.
